Javed the fourth

After struggling for two and a half years, Bangladesh opener Javed Omar finally succeeded in getting his maiden Test hundred. He scored 119 in hot and humid conditions at the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar yesterday.

Javed, who scored only 14 in the first Test in Karachi, became only the fourth Bangladesh batsman to score hundred in Test cricket. Out of those four, Habibul Bashar is the only one to have scored two centuries.

Javed, who made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in April 2001, had scored four fifties including 85 not out in his first match. That innings also made him the third batsman in Test history to carry his bat.

He got to the magical three-figure mark after batting for 374 minutes and facing 292 balls that featured 16 boundaries.

Javed added another 19 runs to his account before his gusty and patient innings came to an end by a viscously inswinging full toss from Pakistan fast bowler Shoiab Akhtar.

Javed batted for 493 minutes for his 119, which is the longest duration for any Bangladeshi batsman to have occupied the crease.

Despite the fine hundred, Javed was not very happy at the end of the day after seeing his team fail to build a sizable total from a commanding position.

"I'm happy to get my first hundred today but I'm not happy the way we were bowled out," he said after the day's play.

"It was not easy to bat for such a long time under so much heat. But I was determined from the beginning that I will score a hundred."

However he didn't forget to dedicate his first-ever Test hundred to his late brother Asif Omar Belim and late coach Moshiur Rahman (Montu).
