The victim, Faruk 30, was an office assistant at New Model High School near Russell Square. He hailed from Laxmipur.

He came out of the school premises to buy cigarette and was run over by the pick-up while crossing Mirpur Road at around 2:00pm.

Faruk was rushed to Shamarita Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The accident took place when the Awami League was holding a rally nearby and a large contingent of police was on duty there.

Driver of the vehicle Swapan and helper Khokon tried to flee but the police and people caught them. Police seized the vehicle and took the two to Dhanmandi Police Station.

As Faruk's body was taken to the school compound, teachers, students and staff burst into tears and many of them wailed, creating a heart-rending scene.

Assistant Headmaster Nazir Ahmed stood at the spot where Faruk died and screamed, "Why did Faruk meet such a tragic end and why are there vehicles on the road during hartal?"
