Extortionists gunned down a truck owner yesterday in the second attempt within a month while he was sleeping at his residence at Mirerbagh in Keraniganj. Thirty-five-year-old Sohrab Hossain, who drove his own truck, was killed as he refused to pay money, family members said. A gang stormed into his apartment on the second floor of Lehaj Uddin's house at Mirerbagh at 7:30am and shot a sleeping Sohrab indiscriminately. Two bullets hit his forehead and three his right hand. While leaving, they threatened the family members of dire consequences if they took him to hospital and disclosed their identity. Going down, the gang took position in the area and kept a watch. The victim's wife, Janu Akhter Pakhi, and other family members tried to take Sohrab to Mitford Hospital. The assailants forced them back to their residence at gunpoint. Using a different lane, the family members took him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died at 4:00pm. Locals said the gang fled in a trawler, kept anchored in the Buriganga. Pakhi said she identified the attackers, but declined to disclose their names on security grounds. The same group shot Sohrab at Mirerbagh paka pool 27 days ago as he refused to oblige them by giving money, but he survived as the bullets hit his legs. The extortionists then went to his residence several times learning that Sohrab was alive. No case was filed till filing of this report at 7:00pm yesterday.
