Defending champions Mohamme-dan Sporting Club got off to a flying start in the Usha Krira Chakra Club Cup hockey tournament with a 13-0 whitewash of Bachelors Sporting Club at the Maulana Bhasani Stadium yesterday.

In a one-sided affair, Moha-mmedan flooded their opponents net with nine goals before the lemon break.

Midfielder Musa Miah celebrated his debut as Mohammedan captain with four goals despite missing a penalty stroke early on. Pakistani recruit Mohammad Asim struck thrice while young forward Ariful Haque Prince and defender Isa Miah added two goals each for the winners.

Former Bangladesh forward Rafiqul Islam Kamal and Tabib-e-Noor scored the other two for the popular Motijheel outfit.

In the other matches, Sonali Bank, aided by two hattricks from Khwaja Tayed Reza and Mamun Hossain, trounced Mukta Bihanga Tarun Sangha by eleven goals to one while Wari Club registered a 3-1 win over Barnak Samaj.

A total of 16 clubs, split into four groups for the first round, are taking part in the 12-day meet. The top team of each group will play in the June 24 semifinals while the final is on June 26.

Last year's champions Mohammedan have been placed in Group A along with Bachelors, Wari Club and Barnak Samaj while Premier Division League champions Abahani, who are scheduled to play Victoria SC today, head Group C that also includes Dhaka Wanderers Club and Ajax Sporting Club.

Mariner Young's Club, Dhaka Railway, Sadharan Bima and Farashganj SC will play in Group B while Group D comprises Sonali Bank, Bangladesh Sporting Club, Mukta Bihanga and sponsor Usha Krira Chakra.

Today Ajax SC meet Dhaka Wanderers in the first match at 12 pm while Usha meet Bangladesh SC at 2: 15 pm. The last match is between Abahani and Dhaka Wanderers at 4:15 pm.
