2-day German-Bangladesh trade symposium begins

A two-day German-Bangladesh trade symposium began at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel yesterday.

German companies Transorga Tec Trading and Awila Agrar Industrieanlagen jointly organised the symposium with the support from their local agents Mtf and Company and Technology and Agro Trading Company.

President of Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Yusuf Abdullah Harun inaugurated the symposium, while deputy head of German Embassy Hermann Nicolai attended the function as special guest.

The function was addressed by Managing Director of Mtf and Company Taiful Islam Khan, managing partner of Technology and Agro Trading Mohammad Altaf Hossain and representatives of the German companies Bernd Luellmann and Oliver Anderhub.

Second-hand German machinery, particularly textile dyeing and processing equipment, animal feed mills, fish and food processing machinery and pharmaceutical equipment are being projected at the symposium.

Citing his experience in using German machinery, Yusuf Abdullah Harun said Bangladesh could be benefited in setting up backward linkage in textile sector with German machinery to meet the post-Multi-Fibre Agreement (MFA) scenario.

Besides, he said there was a bright prospect of agro-based industry and modern health services in the country where German machinery could play a vital role.

Hermann Nicolai said Bangladesh-German trade balance is heavily in favour of Bangladesh as the country exports goods worth 850 million euro to Germany annually against 150 million euro German exports to Bangladesh.
