20-party calls hartal in Gazipur for tomorrow
The BNP-led 20-party alliance will enforce a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Gazipur district and stage demonstrations across the country tomorrow protesting restrictions on its rally where Khaleda Zia was scheduled to address.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of ruling Awami League, postponed its rally following the BNP’s decision.
Gazipur district administration this afternoon imposed Section 144 at Bhawal Bodr-E-Alam Government College ground --where both the BNP and BCL had declared to hold a rally on Saturday -- and the adjacent areas to ward off any untoward incidents.
Fazlul Haque Milon, president of Gazipur district BNP, declared the hartal programme while Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the countrywide demonstrations at a press briefing after a meeting of the party.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia held the urgent meeting with the party’s standing committee members, senior leaders and Gazipur district unit leaders at her Gulshan office this evening.
“We have postponed our rally showing respect to the law. But our activists will remain in the streets of Gazipur so that none can create violence in the name of hartal,” BCL General Secretary Siddiqui Nazmul Alam told The Daily Star.
He, however, said BNP’s programmes would be resisted politically unless the party make apology for Tareque Rahman’s derogatory remarks on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
