20 hurt in Jamaat-cop clash, 3 detained
At least 20 people including two policemen were injured as the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, clashed with law enforcers in Natore today.
Meanwhile, the law enforcers detained three Jamaat-Shibir activists from Mohakhali in the capital when they tried to bring out a procession as part of their countrywide demonstration programme.
Jamaat on Saturday announced a programme to hold demonstration across the country demanding release of its central leaders Motiur Rahman Nizami and Delawar Hossain Sayedee, who are now behind the bar in war crimes cases.
NATORE
At least 20 people including two policemen were injured during a clash between Jamaat-Shibir activists and police personnel in Sadar upazila.
The police personnel had to fire 14 bullets and nine teargas shells to bring the situation under control, reports our Natore correspondent.
Four activists of Jamaat and Shibir were picked up from the scene, said Nahid Hossain, superintendent of police of Natore.
The SP said around 200 Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession from Harishpur bypass area around 8:00am.
As the activists tried to enter the town, police chased the Jamaat-Shibir activists in front of Sher-e-Bangla High School, triggering a clash.
The activists hurled brick chips at police personnel during the clash, which left two police officers injured, the SP said.
The injured policemen -- Aslam Uddin, officer-in-charge of the Sadar Police Station, and sub-inspector Noor Alam – received primary treatment at Sadar Hospital.
Contacted, Atiqul Islam Russel, city unit ameer of Jamaat, claimed that police swooped on the procession of Jamaat-Shibir men without any provocation, which left at least 18 party activists injured.
The injured were rushed to different local hospitals.
DHAKA
Police nabbed the three activists of Jamaat-Shibir when they were taking preparation to bring out a procession near Wireless Gate in Mohakhali area around 8:30am as part of their central programme, said Abu Bakar Siddique, operational officer of Banani Police Station.
RAJSHAHI
Jamaat-Shibir men also brought out a procession in Talaimari area of Rajshahi city around 10:00am as part of the programme.
