2 robbers killed in 'shootout' with cops
Two alleged robbers were killed in a “shootout” with police in the district's Ramu upazila early yesterday.
The dead are Anwar Hossain, 32, and Khalil Ahmed, 28, of Dariardighi village.
Saykul Ahmed Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Ramu Police Station, said a team of patrol police took position in Toayangakata area around 2:30am, acting on a tip-off that a gang of robbers was planning to commit a robbery on Ramu-Marichya road.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire. Police also returned fire, triggering a “gunfight” between the law enforcers and the robbers, said the police official.
During the “gunfight”, Anwar and Khalil were hit by bullets. The others managed to escape.
Police took the duo to Ramu Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared them dead. The bodies were sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies, Saykul added.
Police recovered two firearms and six bullets from the spot.
Three policemen and an Ansar member were hurt in the “gunfight” and were given first aid at the health complex.
Meanwhile, villagers of Dariardighi caught an alleged robber, Bashir Ahmed, around 7:00am and handed over him to police, said Saykul.
Ten incidents of “gunfight” occurred between law enforcers and robbers, criminals and Yaba traders in Cox's Bazar in the last one month. Eight alleged criminals were killed and 12 others injured in those incidents.commit a robbery on Ramu-Marichya road.
