2 on 20-day remand for snatching JMB men
Two persons arrested for attacking a prison van and snatching three JMB men in Mymensingh yesterday were placed on a 20-day remand today.
Senior Judicial Magistrate in Tangail Sonia Begum granted the remand in two cases filed over the incident after Shakipur police produced Zakaria Hossain and Md Russell before the court.
Locals caught microbus driver Zakaria, 29, and handed him over to police on Sunday in Shakhipur, reports our Tangail correspondent.
Police arrested Russell in Toktarchala area on the same day suspecting him as a member of the banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh.
In a well-orchestrated plan, an armed gang ambushed a prison van and snatched away three convicted JMB militants -- two of them on death row -- in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh Sunday.
Police, however, captured one of the trio from Shakhipur while he was fleeing on a three-wheeler, about five hours after the incident. He was killed in a 'shootout' with police in Mirzapur, Tangail early today.
A police constable was killed as the gang of 10-15, all masked, opened fire and hurled crude bombs at the prison van at Signboard point of Aminabari area around 10:00am.
