2 lakh yaba tablets seized
Bangladesh Coast Guard members seized two lakh yaba tablets worth about Tk 10 crore from the Karnaphuli river in Chittagong city early yesterday.
Acting on a tip-off, a patrol team of coast guard (east zone) chased a boat near Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Ltd (Kafco) area around 2:00am. At one stage, smugglers capsized the boat along the river bank and threw a sack of yaba tablets to the ground and fled the scene, said a press release of the coast guard.
The tablets will be handed over to the Department of Narcotics Control, said sources of the coast guard.
Captain Shahidul Islam, zonal commander of the coast guard, said the tablets might have come from Myanmar. So far almost all the yaba tablets they have seized were smuggled into Chittagong from the country.
“The smugglers may have been trying to smuggle yaba tablets into Chittagong from Myanmar through new routes since we started conducting regular operations in Teknaf, Shahparir Dwip, St Martin's Island and Cox's Bazar Sadar,” he said.
“They then send the tablets to Dhaka and elsewhere in the country by road,” Shahidul added.
On July 1, coast guard members arrested a man with 1.5 lakh yaba tablets worth around Tk 7.75 lakh from a fishing boat at the outer anchorage of Chittagong port. Besides, detectives seized 30,000 yaba tablets worth about Tk 1 crore from the city's Fisherighat area on June 20.
