Police arrested two youths along with 53,100 fake national identity (NID) cards and 36,300 photographs in separate raids in the capital and Gazipur last night.
The law enforcers also seized equipment for producing fake NID cards, which include printer, computer, SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) from their possession, said Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The detainees -- Aminul Islam alias Mamun, 23, and Taufique Islam, 25 -- are members of a group involved in making fake NID cards, Monirul said at a press briefing at DMP media centre at capital's Minto Road.
A police team led by Krishna Chandra Mitra, a sub-inspector of Kodomtali Police Station, nabbed Mamun during a raid at Kodomtali around 10:15pm with 4,650 NID cards, he said.
According to the information produced by Mamun during an interrogation, the law enforcers later at night conducted another raid at the residence of Taufique at Arichpur in Tongi upazila of Gazipur and arrested him, the police spokesperson said.
The rest fake cards were seized at Taufique's residence, he said.
Mamun and Taufique were used to craft fake NID cards with their seized equipment, he added.
Criminals use the fake NID cards to commit crimes, the police official added at the press briefing.
