2 ‘drug smugglers’ killed in ‘shootouts’
Two alleged drug smugglers were killed in separate “shootouts” with law enforcers in Mymensingh and Cox’s Bazar early today.
Hossain Ahmed, 32, was killed in a “gunfight” with the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox’s Bazar while Rafiqul Islam Khokon, 40, with police in Mymensingh.

The BGB men claimed Yaba trader Ahmed was killed in a “shootout” with them in Alikhali village in Teknaf upazila.
A total of 40,000 Yaba tablets have also been recovered from the scene.
Ahmed, 32, son of Mozzaffar Ahmed of Rangi Khali village was killed during a “gunfight” that started when the smugglers carrying the yaba tablets opened fired at the border guards, prompting them to retaliate, said Lt Col Abu Jar Al Zahid, commanding officer (CO) of Tekhnaf BGB battalion 42.
The law enforcers claimed to have recovered two cartridges from the spot.
BGB officials will hold a press briefing later in the day to brief about the gunfight.
MYMENSINGH
Khokon, an accused in six cases, was killed in a “shootout” with policemen in Iswarganj upazila around 1:30am.
Three police personnel were injured including one with bullet wounds during the “gunfight”, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Iswarganj police, led by its officer-in-charge Md Akhtaruzzaman, conducted a drive in Sohag Bazar area around 1:30am to detain the alleged drug peddling gang, the OC said.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the miscreants hurled four crude bombs and brickbats towards them, he alleged.
At one stage, Khokon fired at least four bullets targeting the policemen, who retaliated with bullets, leaving him injured, Akhtaruzzaman claimed.
Khokon was whisked off to Ishwarganj Upazila Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries later.
The body was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Khokon was a policeman who was sacked in 2000 due to his alleged involvement in illegal drug business. Since then, he had been continuing drug trading and criminal activities through a gang in Sohagi area, police said.
The injured policemen – OC Akhtaruzzaman, sub-inspector Masud Rana and constable Imdad – are undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex.
Of them, Masud Rana suffered bullet wounds during the “gunfight”.
