2 die, 10 missing as trawlers collide in Shitalakkhya
At least two people were killed and 10 others remained missing as two trawlers capsized after colliding head-on in the Shitalakkhya River in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila this afternoon.
Two bodies were recovered from the river, our Gazipur correspondent reports quoting Mohosinul Kader, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station saying “a rescue operation is going on.”
The two passenger-laden trawlers collided from opposite directions in Trimohoni area around 1:45pm. They were travelling to and from Gaforgaon and Bormi areas, the OC said.
Both the trawlers were salvaged around 4:00pm, said Jashimuddin Mir, a member of Kaoraid union. “Ten people are missing while 18 others managed to swim ashore. Two bodies have been recovered.”
He primarily identified the two victims as Asma Begum, 35, and an eight-month-old minor Sabiqun Nahar.
Locals and members of Fire Service and Civil Defense were carrying out search and rescue operation until last reported around 5:00pm.
