2 dailies, 7 journos exempted
The High Court today exempted seven journalists and two Bangla dailies from contempt of court proceedings disposing of a rule issued for issuing and publishing a statement on a sub-judice matter.
The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order after the day's proceedings which was marked by a scuffle between a group of lawyers and journalists.
The HC summoned seven journalists before it today to explain their statement over Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud's arguments in a contempt of court case filed against Mizanur Rahman, joint editor of Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
The journalists who were summoned are: Shahed Chowdhury and Elias Khan, president and general secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity; MM Jasim and Saddam Hossain, president and general secretary of Dhaka University Journalists Association; Abdur Rahman, president of Barisal Division Journalists' Association; Kazi Mobarak Hossain and M Sujaul Islam, president and general secretary of Jagannath University Journalists' Association.
Shortly after resuming the day's proceedings, both the judges left the courtroom as chaos erupted there when some lawyers hurled abusive words at journalists. The proceedings were held at Justice Haider's office later.
After holding hearing on the contempt rule, the court sat again in afternoon to pronounce its verdict.
Advocate Shah Deen Malik moved for the accused journalists.
