2 BCL men hurt in CU factional clash
Two activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League were stabbed during a factional clash at Chittagong University (CU) this morning following a feud over establishing supremacy on the campus.
Both the groups also chased and counter chased triggering panic on the campus, reports our CU correspondent.
Police detained the two injured – Sohel Khan, a fourth year student of English department; and Kaiser, another fourth year student of Bangla department – as they are suspects in Taposh Chandra Sarkar murder case, said Mohammad Ismail, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station.
They were rushed to Hathazari Upazila Health Complex under police custody.
On December 14 last year, Taposh, a first year student of Sanskrit department, was killed and four others were injured in a clash between Choose Friends with Care (CFC) and Varsity Xpress (VX), two shuttle train based factions of the pro-Awami League BCL, on the campus.
There had been a longstanding feud between the two groups over establishing supremacy on the campus, Abul Khayar, in-charge of CU police outpost, said.
The CFC is led by Amit Kumar, vice-president of the BCL CU unit, while the other faction by SM Ariful Islam, former organising secretary of the unit.
The members of CFC chased the VX men as the latter group entered Shahjalal Hall to take control of the dormitory around 6:00am.
The men also locked the main entrance of the university and vandalised some shops around 8:00am but police unlocked it after few moments, Abul Khayar said.
Police also fired tear shells to bring the situation under control, he said.
The injured students are supporters of SM Ariful Islam.
Additional police has been deployed on the campus to avert any untoward incident, Abul Khayar added.
A tense situation has been prevailing on the campus following the incident.
Meanwhile, law enforcers have detained at least 48 students and recovered some sharp weapons, iron rods and sacks of stones from Shahjalal Hall, said OC Ismail.
Policemen, led by district’s Additional Superintend of Police Mostafizur Rahman, conducted the drive this afternoon, Ismail said.
Another 12 students have been picked up from Shah Amanat Hall in a raid there, said Salah Uddin, OC (investigation) of Hathazari Police Station.
