16 rescued while being trafficked to Malaysia
Police in a drive yesterday arrested 19 people, including three traffickers, from remote Boro Chhon Khola area in Lama upazila of the district on Friday night when they gathered there to leave for Malaysia illegally.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided a rubber garden of Anis Molla in the area and rounded them up.
The 16 victims of trafficking hailed from different places of Satkhira, Jessore, Kishoreganj, Tangail, Comilla, and Brahmanbaria districts.
Among them, two alleged human traffickers are Nazrul Mia and Abdul Jabbar of Cox's Bazar while the other accused, Abul Hossain, was manager of Anis Molla's rubber garden in Lama upazila.
Contacted, Md Sirajul Islam, officer in-charge of Lama Police Station, said a team of police raided the area around 10:15pm and arrested 19 people.
Quoting the arrestees, the OC said that the three human traffickers first brought them to Cox's Bazar a few days ago promising to send them to Malaysia by a boat.
They took Tk 20 to 25 thousand per head but fled from Cox's Bazar to the remote area of Lama upazila when Cox's Bazar police planned to raid their den.
A case was filed with Lama Police Station in this connection, the OC added.
