15TH HRSS on Human Rights and Religion
THE 15th Human Rights Summer School (HRSS) has been started at PROSHIKA HRDC, Koitta, Manikgonj on 10 October 2014 with the participation of 48 selected law students of 12 universities of home and abroad. HRSS is a two weeks residential course on human rights jurisprudence conducted by law research institution, Empowerment through Law of the Common People (ELCOP).
This year the theme of HRSS is 'Human Rights and Religion'. The theme is undertaken to address the intricate relationship between human rights and religion.
Law students should learn how to draw a red line between the legal theories and real life practice, said Justice A.B.M. Khairul Haque while addressing the inaugural session as Chief Guest. . He also suggested them not to thrive for money throughout their life but to work hard for a noble cause, to toil their life for humanity and human rights.
The President of the opening session, Professor Dr. M. Shah Alam dragged the serious issue of misinterpretation of religion. He said that, the greatest havoc in mankind may come from the misinterpretation of religion and it may result into miscarriage of justice.
While talking about Summer School, Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Chairman, National Human Rights Commission Bangladesh said that, Summer School is not all about emphasising on traditional learning system rather it is a place where students are made to challenge the traditional theories and whether those theories should prevail or not.
