A Dhaka court today indicted 154 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, in a case filed for torching and vandalising vehicles and attempting to kill policemen in Dhaka last year.
Shibir President Delwar Hossain Sayeedi and Assistant Secretary Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud are among the accused.
Metropolitan Magistrate Tareq Mainul Islam Bhuiyan of Speedy Trial Court-6 fixed October 12 for starting the trial of the case.
The court also cancelled bail of 76 accused, out of 154, and issued arrest warrants against them as they failed to appear before the court today.
Among the other accused, Sayeedi and Shafiqul, who are in police custody, while 60 others, now on bail, were present at the court room.
The rest 16 Jamaat-Shibir men remain absconding since filing of the case on February 13, 2013.
On that day, the Jamaat-Shibir men resorted to hit-and-run attacks on police and rampaged through different parts of Dhaka after they were barred from holding unscheduled rallies to demand the release of their leaders facing war crimes trial.
They also attacked police in Agargaon, Paltan, Dainik Bangla intersection, Baitul Mukarram, Fakirerpool and Motijheel areas of Dhaka.
