At least 15 people were injured when activists of the ruling Awami League clashed with Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP supporters in Senbag upazila of Noakhali this evening.
Police were compelled to fire about 20 rounds of blank shots to bring the situation under control, our Noakhali correspondent reports.
Jamaat and its student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a pro-hartal flash procession at Chatarpaira Bazar around 8:00pm, MM Ashrafuzzaman, Noakhali police additional superintendent, told our correspondent from the spot.
“A clash broke out when Awami League supporters attacked them. At one point, supporters of BNP also joined with Jamaat activists during the clash,” the official added.
Witnesses said about eight business establishments were vandalised while about 15 people were injured in the clash. On information, police rushed to the spot and fired 20 blank rounds to calm the situation.
Additional police were deployed in the area to avert any further untoward incident.
The incident took place during and ahead of the Jamaat-sponsored countrywide hartal spell protesting death verdict of party’s top central leaders.
