138 jaywalkers fined on day 3
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) today fined 138 people from Tk 9910 in Farmgate and Banglamotor areas in Dhaka as a part of its ongoing drive against jaywalkers.
Sarwoer Alam, an executive magistrate at Farmgate, told The Daily Star Online that some 60 people were fined from Tk 5240 since the morning under various terms.
“Today, more people are using the footbridges. The number of violators is low,” the magistrate said.
Apart from this, around 38 makeshift shops from alongside the road near the main footbridge in the Farmgate area have also been removed and the hawkers have also been asked not to occupy the footpaths again, he added.
The drive will be carried out till December 1 in a bid to make the pilot drive a success, he added.
Talking to Quddus who is also an executive magistrate deployed in Banglamotor area said his team has fined at least 78 people were fined from Tk 4670 for avoiding footbridges.
Today was the third day of the weeklong pilot drive initiated by Dhaka police to check public trying to cross road without footbridges or indiscriminately.
In the last two days, more than 500 people were fined from Tk 50 to Tk 200.
The drive will continue through the Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue from Ruposhi Bangla hotel to Farmgate with violators facing up to six months in prison or maximum Tk 200 fine.
The road leading from Ruposhi Bangla hotel to Farmgate police box has five foot over-bridges and one underpass.
Among the three foot bridges at Farmgate, one has been sealed off and the other is under maintenance. Vendors occupy most of the space on the footbridges.
The lone foot bridge at Banglamotor has construction work obstructing pedestrians to board the bridge on one end and makeshift tea stalls at the other.
The underpass at Kawran Bazar is stinky, dirty and poorly lit.
