12 missing as trawler capsizes in Meghna
At least 12 people went missing after a trawler carrying 35 passengers capsized into Meghna River in Bhairab upazila of Kishorganj this afternoon.
The trawler was moving towards Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria from Bhairab and sank into the river at about 3:15pm, Badrul Alam, officer-in-charge of Bhairab Police Station, told The Daily Star.
On information, several units from Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and rescued most of the passengers.
The 12 passengers remain missing till 5:30pm, the OC added.
An additional five-member firefighter team of a fire service unit from Dhaka has begun their rescue operation around 5:35pm, the OC said.
Reason behind the trawler capsize could not be known immediately, the OC said.
Soon after the accident, two staff of the vessel -- Shain and Zahid -- were detained in this connection.
Yesterday, a cargo vessel carrying 1,300 tonnes of cement clinker capsized in Meghna river in Chandpur after it was hit by another water vessel.
