12 killed in India train crash
At least 12 people were killed and 45 injured when two passenger trains collided head-on near Gorakhpur town in Uttar Pradesh of India Tuesday night.
The accident took place when Krishak (farmers) Express train jumped a signal that brought it on the same track of Barauni Express at a place about seven kilometres from Gorakhpur town around 11:30pm, reports our Delhi correspondent quoting a senior official of Indian railway.
The driver of Krishak Express was to halt at the 'home signal'. But he apparently jumped the red signal leading to a head-on collision with the Barauni Express, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting the officials.
The Krishak Express tore through a coach and badly damaged three other coaches of Barauni Express. Five coaches of Barauni Express were also thrown off the track, he added.
Drivers of the Krishak Express Ram Bahadur and Satyajeet Kumar fled from spot, an official said.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of North-Eastern Railways (NER) Alok Singh admitted that the drivers of the Krishak Express went beyond the red signal. Railway Board has ordered a probe into the incident, he said.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel stationed nearby have joined the rescue and relief operations. Gas cutters and cranes have been pressed into service.
