11 remanded over RU teacher murder
A Rajshahi court today placed 11 people on a two-day remand in a case filed over the killing of Rajshahi University teacher AKM Shafiul Islam.
Judge Sharmin Akhter of the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate passed the order after police produced them before the court with a 10-day remand prayer, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
RU sociology department Professor Shafiul, 48, was hacked to death by assailants near his house in Choddopai area, adjacent to the RU campus, on the outskirts of the city on Saturday.
Three days into the killing of Shafiul, 11 people, mostly alleged supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, were shown arrested in the case.
Meanwhile, thousands of people under the banner of RU Teacher Association formed a human chain at the Zero Point of the city around 3:45pm demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the killers.
Members of civil society and different professional bodies including journalists took part in the human chain to press home their demand.
During the human chain, Pranab Kumar Pande general secretary of the RU Teacher Association warned that they would wage a tougher movement if a charge sheet against the real killers is not submitted within 15 days.
Taking part in the programme, RU student affairs adviser Sadequl Arefin Matin said more RU teachers may fall prey to the killers if the culprits are not tried and punished exemplarily.
Earlier, Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee of RU unit also formed a human chain in front of the RU Senate Bhaban to meet the same demand.
‘LIFE THREAT, BURIAL SHROUD WERE SERVED BEFORE’
Fundamentalists had issued threats over mobile phones and sent burial shrouds before to slain Shafiul Islam, his son Soumin Shahrid Javin told The Daily Star Online today.
“They were against the Lalon musical gatherings that my father would arrange in the house once a week. They threatened him to stop such programmes.
“Even, burial shrouds were sent in a bid to stop him.
Javin urged the government as well as the authority concerned to arrest the killers and ensure their punishment. “Fair trial and exemplary punishment are my last hopes.”
1 MORE DETAINED
The fiancé of the female student found inside the house of slain Shafiul Islam was detained, SardarTomiz Uddin Ahmed, Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) told to our correspondent.
The detainee is Jahangir Alam, from Sirajganj and a masters degree holder from sociology department. The detainee was brought to Rajshahi for interrogation, the AC said.
Shafiul was the local guardian of the girl, the police official said. She had bad results in her SSC and HSC examinations, yet she secured first class first in her honors examination.
“We are investigating whether the girl’s fiancé had any grudge against the slain teacher. We need to verify some information from the girl”, he added.
He also said that police were progressing with caution considering harassment of innocent people in the case.
Shafiul was married thrice and he was living alone since 2010.
Meanwhile, teachers of Rajshahi University today alleged that the police were trying to demean the character of Shafiul instead of conducting a proper investigation.
