1 dies in Meghna trawler capsize
A man died as a salt-laden trawler sank into the Meghna River due to the heavy current at Gazipur point of Haimchar upazila in Chandpur this morning.
The victim was identified as Ershad, 50, a resident of Mirersharai upazila in Chittagong, our Chandpur correspondent reports quoting police.
The Narayanganj bound salt-laden trawler from Kutubdia plunged down into the river around 11:30am due to heavy current in the river, leaving Ershad dead, said Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Haimchar police station.
Fishermen and locals rescued nine people who were also traveling by the trawler. They are now undergoing treatment at the Haimchar Health Complex, the OC said.
The OC said they have informed the matter to Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) in Chandpur for salvaging the capsized trawler.
